Braces have been around for decades and are the most commonly used treatment for correcting overcrowding, misalignment, and gapped teeth.
Do your or your child’s teeth look crooked or crowded? Do you wish your smile was straighter and more uniform? Our dentists may suggest braces to help you or a family member achieve the smile of your dreams.
Thanks to advances in orthodontic techniques, materials, and technology, braces are now more discreet, comfortable, and effective than ever before.
For Your Health and Self Image
Correcting your smile with braces is a great way to improve your appearance and give your self-confidence a boost. But braces serve more than cosmetic purposes. When teeth do not align properly, several oral health problems may eventually arise:
- Teeth that overlap may prove difficult to keep clean. Tooth decay may develop in the spots where a toothbrush cannot easily reach.
- Enamel may become worn down, chipped, or cracked in spots where the upper and lower arch do not fit together properly.
- Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder may develop, which can cause clicking or popping in the jaw, as well as chronic pain in the jaw, head, and neck.
The cosmetic benefits of braces should not be underestimated, either. Studies have shown that when a person is happy with the state of one’s smile, self-confidence and joy are elevated. Going through life with a smile you feel is less than ideal may cause you to be more inhibited, and less likely to feel good about sharing your smiles and laughter with others.
How Braces Work
Traditional braces use metal brackets and wires to place constant, gentle pressure on the teeth, slowly guiding them to their proper alignment. The brackets are attached to the front of the teeth, and the wire is connected to the brackets. When your dentist adjusts the wire, your smile undergoes small changes that contribute incrementally to a new, straighter smile. We can also use braces to correct problems with the bite, such as open bite, overbite, under bite, and cross bite. Bite problems may not be as visible as crowded teeth, but can contribute to worn, cracked and chipped teeth, as well as painful disorders of the jaw.
Braces can be worn at any age, but are especially effective when worn by children whose teeth and facial bones are still developing. It is easier to guide teeth into a proper state of alignment as they come in, rather than after they have already been firmly established in their placement. If you have a child
What to Expect
The first step with braces is taking a dental impression of your teeth. From there, a model of your ideal alignment will be created, to guide the process during treatment. Metal bands will be placed around the molars, and metal brackets attached to the front of the teeth. A wire will be threaded through the brackets to apply gentle pressure, which encourages the teeth to shift gradually over time. Each month, you will return to the dentist for adjustment of the wire. Month to month, you will be one step closer to your perfect smile.
Braces are incredibly effective at giving you a gorgeous smile, but require a number of oral hygiene considerations. The first is that certain foods, especially sticky and hard foods, may need to be avoided to prevent damage to the braces or knocking loose metal brackets. Another consideration is oral hygiene routines. With braces, you can still brush your teeth as per your normal routine, but flossing will require special tools, as loose floss is nearly impossible to thread through the wire. Your dentist can recommend a number of special interdental picks that may be comfortable and easy to use.
